Understanding the Reasons for Using Equine Supplements for your Horses

Have you ever walked through the vitamin section of your local drug store? It seems there is a vitamin to serve every purpose. It can be quite confusing. Now try to imagine how difficult it is trying to find equine vitamins for your horse. The sheer number and reasons for vitamins and supplements will make your head spin. However, as confusing as it may be your horse still will need to be given them in order to stay in good health.

In order to raise a healthy horse, you need to start by planning out its diet. Most experts recommend feeding it a combination of grains, hay, and concentrates mixed with daily vitamin requirements. By following this regiment on a regular basis, you are almost guaranteed to improve the horse’s overall health. It is important though to be careful not to over-feed the animal, which can happen if you are keeping a log or chart to monitor feedings. Over-feeding often leads to severe health problems like abnormalities in its joints. Some horses see an increased risk of colic when its diet is drastically altered.

Another health problem for horses easily solved through equine vitamins is mineral deficiencies. While these types of problems aren’t common when there is abundant quality pasture or hay available, some horses don’t have that luxury. An example of where a mineral deficiency can happen is in a growing foal. These youngsters need to be provided extra diet measures like extra calcium and some phosphorus. Another mineral typically missing from a horse’s diet is selenium. This can be resolved by giving the horse a salt block enriched with selenium.

The reason why a horse is more susceptible to vitamin and mineral deficiencies is because of their unique digestive systems. Normally its digestive system can easily produce all the vitamins the animal’s body requires. Sometimes, it doesn’t produce enough and this is where the supplements come in to play. Just like our bodies sometimes have hiccups and small health problems, so do horses.

Above all, it is crucial to remember that not every vitamin or supplement will be beneficial to you animal. I recommend that all horse owners consult a veterinarian about whether or not to begin starting your horse on a vitamin regiment. It can never hurt to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to their overall health.
